COCKROACHES CARRY DISEASE & TRIGGER ALLERGIES
Salmonella, cholera, pneumonia, tetanus and tuberculosis are some of the more common diseases that can be transmitted from cockroaches to humans. Even though a cockroach bite leaves no mark, it can cause an infection and transmit disease.
Cockroaches feed off of fecal matter and are attracted to rotting organic matter. They leave a trail of excrement and regurgitated food which are possible contaminates within a living space. They can also trigger asthma symptom as their fecal matter and body parts are well known allergens.
Cockroaches usually come out at night to feed and rest during the day. That means if you are seeing them in daylight hours, they are low on food or moisture. It could also mean the population may have become so large that they have been forced to move into unsafe areas at odd hours to forage for food.
TYPES OF COCKROACHES COMMON TO NYC & VINCINITY
There are three types of cockroaches common to the NYC, Nassau and Bohemia Counties; American, German and Oriental.
American cockroaches are the largest species of common cockroaches. They are a chestnut brown colored seed shaped insect with a yellowish figure 8 pattern and is the largest common to the New York area. They can get up 1 ½ inches in length with wings that can take flight. They travel quickly, darting into small cracks and under doors when a threat is perceived.
German cockroaches are a tan colored seed shaped insect with a dark equal sign or double stripes and are smaller in size, ½ inch. The German cockroach reproduces faster than any other residential cockroach and their smaller stature allow them to hide within the smallest of crevices so that they are often overlooked well before their population explodes.
The Oriental cockroach, also known as the waterbug or black beetle, is a glossy black or brown pill shaped insect with no markings. They grow up to an inch in length and travel slowly and prefer dark moist places, such as basements, drains, sewers and other damp locations.
